These three animals specifically fit the larger-scale presence of The Christmas Story and Sanctuary. “I wanted these animals to have a calming, yet very stoic, elegant presence — by their gestures, their stance, the turn of their heads. I experimented with color and texture to give them a softness. I was interested in transforming a hard surface by carving and carving into it until it looked wooly or furry, or in the case of the donkey, had the clothlike surface of a blanket.” --Susan Lordi

The Crèche is designed to display the classic Nativity collection. While simple in architectural detail, the Crèche has meaning built into its very design. The piece has a regal, stately appearance, yet is constructed from humble materials of barn wood and nails. The structure’s proportions also suggest the size and shape of the cross, while its rusty nails foretell the crucifixion. "Christmas is all about giving... so I wanted this Tree Topper to give a presence of light. A star is such a strong Christmas symbol... perhaps that's why it has traditionally graced the top of the tree. Since the sun is also a star, I designed the Starlight Tree Topper with a sun-like shape... the sun, by its very nature, radiates warmth, energy and light. Starlight Tree Topper holds a delicate, pierced metal star encrusted with glitter that catches the light and sparkles at every angle. The inside of the figure is hollow to accommodate the top branch of the tree.

This pierced-metal backdrop was created to complement The Holy Family, though it can be used as a beautiful backdrop for other angels or figures as well. “The repetitive swirling concentric mark-making is suggestive of twinkling stars at night. The roof is an intertwined, organic structure that suggests a bower of twigs or branches. Since the surface patterning is complex with tiny elements, I wanted to pare down the form to the simplest possible. It’s basically a single sheet of pierced metal, curved to allow it to stand and represent a shelter for The Holy Family and animals.” –Susan Lordi
